The coach out of Dalaman is still filling up, the luggage is being loaded underneath, and somebody has already taken their phone off aeroplane mode. Fourteen nights in Ölüdeniz, İçmeler or Gümbet, and the first decision of the holiday is which line is going to carry the data.
If you have used a travel eSIM before, you probably do not need another explainer. What matters for a fortnight on the Turkish coast is how much data to buy, what happens to your UK number, how the phone handles two active lines, and what to do if the data runs out before the holiday does.
Check whether your plan includes Turkey
Turkey is outside the EU roaming rules. Whether your UK plan includes it depends on your operator and tariff: it may be included, covered by an add-on, or charged separately. Do not assume that a package labelled Europe covers Turkey.
Some operators sell a daily pass for Turkey. Fine for a weekend, a very different proposition across fourteen nights, so compare the total for your stay with the cost and validity of a travel data plan. Check it in your own operator's app, not in a forum post from two summers ago.
And if you find yourself eyeing the SIM stalls in arrivals, one thing first. Turkey registers the IMEI of foreign phones that use a Turkish SIM, and an unregistered handset can be blocked from local networks after a period. A travel profile connects as a guest rather than as a local subscriber, so it sits outside that process.
How much data a fortnight on the coast actually takes
A beach holiday is not a city break. In Istanbul the phone works all day. In Marmaris or Bodrum you are largely in one place on hotel or villa Wi-Fi, and the phone works in bursts: the transfer, the boat day out of Fethiye or Göcek, the trip up to Dalyan, the evening spent hunting for somewhere to eat behind the marina.
As a rough guide to daily data use:
- maps, WhatsApp and email: 100 to 200 MB
- the same plus a bit of scrolling: 300 to 500 MB
- filming, posting stories, video calls home: 700 MB to 1.2 GB
- tethering a laptop, or handing a tablet to a child on the balcony: 1.5 GB and up
For two weeks, treat 5 to 10 GB as a starting point if you have Wi-Fi at your accommodation and mainly use maps, messages and social apps. Daily video calls, frequent uploads or sharing the connection with others may push you beyond that, and whether sharing works at all depends on your phone and on the plan. The figures above are planning estimates: app settings and video quality make a substantial difference.
Hotel and villa Wi-Fi can be unreliable, so leave some room in your data allowance. Your first few days may be busier while you find your feet, but boat trips, video calls and uploads can change that pattern later. Check your actual usage rather than assuming the second week will need less.
Then the two settings that matter more than plan size: turn off video autoplay in your social apps, and set photo backup to Wi-Fi only. Two weeks of beach photos quietly uploading over mobile data is the most efficient way to make a plan disappear.
Your UK number stays exactly where it is
Your number stays the same. Keep your UK line enabled and check that your operator allows it to receive calls and texts abroad. Your phone also needs to support the combination of active SIMs you want to use.
Bank codes split into two kinds. If your bank approves payments in its own app, that runs over data, so it works over the travel plan like any other app. If your bank sends a one-time code by text, the code goes to your UK number, and that line has to be registered on a network to receive it. Which is why you turn data roaming off for it rather than switching the line off.
Receiving texts abroad is usually not charged. Calls, made or received, generally are. Your own price list settles it, and it takes two minutes to check before you fly.
WhatsApp, Signal and Telegram are tied to your number, not to the profile carrying the data, so they carry on as before.
Living with two profiles on one phone
On an iPhone, open Settings and find Mobile Service or Mobile Data; the wording varies with your iOS version. There are three settings to check:
- Set Mobile Data to the travel line.
- Turn Data Roaming on for the travel line. This feels wrong, since avoiding roaming was the whole point, but the travel profile joins a partner network as a guest and the phone files that as roaming. With it off, nothing works.
- Turn Data Roaming off for the UK line, and leave Default Voice Line set to your UK number so calls and texts behave normally.
Then turn off Allow Mobile Data Switching to keep your choice of data line fixed. This setting does not mean the phone always switches to your UK line whenever reception drops. Keep Data Roaming off on that line as well.
Two more iPhone details: keep your usual number selected for iMessage and FaceTime, and give the travel profile a recognisable name. The number used by these apps is separate from the line carrying their data. Also check whether your phone can keep two eSIMs active at once if your UK line already uses one.
On Android, the menu names vary by manufacturer: look for SIMs, SIM manager or the mobile data settings. Select the travel eSIM for data and disable automatic data switching if your phone offers it. If roaming cannot be controlled separately for each SIM, check the manufacturer’s instructions before enabling it; do not assume a single switch leaves your UK line protected.
The device check that still catches people
Many iPhones from the XR generation onwards support eSIM, but the exact model and sales region matter, especially for imports from China, Hong Kong or Macao. Android support also varies by model and region, including on recent mid-range phones. Look for Add eSIM in settings, then confirm compatibility in the manufacturer’s specifications if the option is missing. Its absence alone does not establish why eSIM is unavailable.
Network locking is the other check. UK mobile providers are no longer allowed to sell locked handsets, but an older, second-hand or imported phone may still be locked. Check its status before buying a travel eSIM, and ask the original operator to unlock it if needed.
If you run out on day eight
If the data runs out before the fortnight does, you can buy another plan while you are there. Read its activation conditions before you pay, and do not assume anything about how it will sit alongside the plan you already have.
The catch is that buying anything needs internet. So do it while you still have some data left, or from the hotel Wi-Fi, rather than discovering the problem at zero in a beach bar in İçmeler.
The habit that prevents it: check your balance during the first few days, then compare what is left with the rest of your plans.
If it does not connect when you land
Phone off aeroplane mode at Dalaman, and nothing. In order:
- Check mobile data is set to the travel line.
- Check data roaming is on for that line.
- Toggle aeroplane mode on and off, then wait a minute. Connecting in a busy arrivals hall can take a little time.
- Restart the phone.
- If there is still nothing, open network selection and search manually for a partner network supported by your plan.
Before you fly, save the QR code to your photos as an image, along with the manual installation details and the order number. Those details can help support investigate, and an arrivals hall with no data is not where you want to find out you cannot reach your email.
Install before you leave the house
Downloading the profile needs internet, so install it at home on Wi-Fi before you travel. Under the standard terms, validity starts when it first connects to a supported network at the destination, unless the plan says otherwise. Read the activation conditions before installing, including any deadline for first use.
A little preparation on the sofa means one less thing to sort out while you wait for the transfer coach.
