Dial the check code
In the phone app dial *#06#. If an EID number appears next to the IMEI, your phone supports eSIM.
iPhone
Settings, then Cellular or Mobile Data. If there is an Add eSIM or Add Data Plan option, your phone supports eSIM.
Android
Settings, then Network and internet, then SIMs. If you can add an eSIM profile, your phone supports eSIM.
What trips people up most often
Carrier-locked phones
If the phone came with a contract and is locked to one operator, another operator eSIM will not work until it is unlocked. Your operator handles the unlocking.
Models bought in mainland China
Some variants made for the Chinese market have no eSIM even when the European version does. If you bought your phone in China, run the manual check.
Two SIMs at the same time
Your home SIM and the eSIM can run side by side. You choose which one carries mobile data and which one takes calls.
